Drawer Interfaces
Cash drawers generally have one of 3 main
types of connection cable allowing them to be connected to
a receipt printer or a computer for automatic operation.
 |
RJ11 Printer
Interface
These cash drawers connect to Epson, Star Micronics, Bixolon
Samsung and other compatible receipt printers or EPoS
terminals which have an RJ11 (also known as RJ12) cash
drawer port. |
| |
|
 |
RS232 Serial
Interface
Serial-interface cash drawers connect directly to a PC's
serial port or an EPoS system terminal and may sometimes
require an external power supply. |
| |
|
 |
USB Interface
USB interface cash drawers connect via the USB port of
a PC or EPoS system terminal. Also see USB
Cash Drawer Trigger. |
Other proprietary cash drawer interface options are also
available. Please always check interface compatibility with
your EPoS software provider beforehand.
EPoS software supplied by Primemark supports both RJ12 and
RS232 Serial interface cash drawers.
Till drawers for particular cash registers will usually have
the manufacturers own proprietary interface cable.
Manually Operated Cash Drawers
Most of our cash drawers can also be operated
manually by key if you do not wish to connect them to a computer/printer
for automatic operation. However, with heavy usage, cash drawer
keys can twist and break over time. For constant manual use,
we recommend either the MS
HP123 Manual Cash Drawer, the PCP
4450 cash drawer or the Cashbases
CashPlus Standard cash drawer which all feature
a specially designed 'push button' or push
mechanism as standard or as an option.
Cash Drawer Dimensions
The measurements stated in the specifications of our cash
drawers generally refer to the main cash drawer unit only
- please allow for any protruding rubber feet at the bottom
of the cash drawer as well as for the rear-exit interface
cable. We advise you to not start any carpentry / shopfitting
work for your cash drawers until you physically receive them.
Cash Drawer Features
Below is an explanation of some of the features of
cash drawers, with some useful buying tips and advice.
Coin and Note Compartments:
Most cash drawers cater for all £Sterling currency
providing 4 note compartments (for £5, £10,
£20 and £50) and 8 coin compartments (for 1p,
2p, 5p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2 coins). Some cash drawers
have adjustable separators for the note compartments. They
can also feature more than 4 note compartments to give you
separate storage for cheques, vouchers and slips. We also
have Euro editions of cash drawers.
External Media Slot:
An external slot is a useful cash drawer feature which allows
slips, cheques and receipts to be slotted into the cash
drawer without the need to open the drawer. The media usually
sits underneath the cash tray.
Cash Drawer Lock:
Most of the cash drawers are controlled by your computer
interface, However they also feature a lock which allows
the drawer to be opened manually as well as to lock it to
prevent unauthorised access. A 3-position lock allows the
drawer to be completely locked so even the computer cannot
open it.
Most models of cash drawers offer different numbered keys.
This is useful if you will have multiple cash drawers at
the same location, and do not wish to allow cashiers to
access each others cash drawers. Remember to specify this
security requirement with your order.
Additional Insert Cash Trays:
Extra cash trays allow you to remove cash trays at the end
of each shift and replace with a new tray. This allows full
cash trays to be transported to a back-office for counting
and verification.
Cash Tray Insert Cover:
Insert covers are useful when the cash tray is being transported
(eg. to the back office). Some inserts provide a lockable
option for added security.
Compulsion Switch:
Some computer interface cash drawers are fitted with a compulsion
switch. This allows software to detect if the drawer is
open or not.
Undermount Bracket:
Some manufacturers provide an optional purpose-built bracket
or bracket set for their cash drawers. This allows the cash
drawer unit to be securely mounted under the counter, rather
than having the cash drawer sat on top of the counter or
for a special shelf to be built underneath. Some cash drawer
bracket kits are made of 4 'S' shaped corner brackets. Other
cash drawer brackets are a 'U' shaped cradle.
Banknote Storage:
Cash drawers can have either diagonal note compartments
for ease of access or flat note compartments to increase
storage capacity. For flat compartments, check that a spring
clip mechanism is available to hold the banknotes securely
in place and to keep them flat. Some cash drawers have a
hinged flap which allow surplus notes to be securely stored
underneath each note compartment.
