Will my PC/software work with
a touch screen?
Yes, in most cases. Our full range of stand-alone touch
screens are designed to connect to the back of a PC
to replace a conventional VGA monitor, with either a
USB or RS232 Serial touch controller cable that is included
with the pack. The touch screen simply emulates mouse
movement and mouse clicks, so wherever you have a software
application which uses a mouse, you can use a touch
screen. We also supply touch screens with neatly integrated
PC's for EPoS and public-information use.
We do not supply add-on touch screen kits
as these are not as reliable or as durable in operation
as purpose-built touch screen monitors.
What types of touch screen are available?
Touchscreens are available as either Desktop
units, Rear-mount or Panel Mount, or
Open-Frame for building into a kiosk.
Stand-alone kiosks as well as integrated Panel PC's
are also available. Most touchscreen models come with
optional mounting holes and wall-mount brackets as well
as built-in speakers and cable-hiding facilities. Standard
casing colours include white, grey and black.
If you dont see the model/edition of touch screen monitor
you require, please call us on as not all available
touch screens are shown on our website.

Guide
to Touch Screen Technology
New to Touch Screens?
A touchscreen is a computer display monitor which also
emulates a keyboard/mouse input device by allowing you
to directly press text links, images and buttons on
the screen. The system is usually made of a sensor on
the front of the screen that links to a controller card.
In addition to the power cable, the touch screen has
2 further cable connections - signal and controller.
The screen itself connects via a cable to your normal
monitor port on the back of your PC (VGA port). A second
controller cable (to emulate the mouse/keyboard) connects
to either a serial port or USB port on the back of your
computer. Some touch screens are equipped with a dual
Serial/USB interface allowing either option to be used.
Software drivers usually have to be installed to operate
the equipment. All our touch screens have MS-Windows
drivers available as well as some other operating systems.
Touch Screen Applications
Applicatons for touch screens include faster point of
sale processing, information kiosks for public use,
factory / industrial control systems as well as educational
uses in schools, colleges and universities. Touch screens
are space saving as the need for a full-size mouse and
keyboard is avoided. They are also much simpler to operate
specialist software applications as the user is only
presented with the on-screen buttons which are relevant
to the task, making them ideal for non-keyboard-literate
users as well as young children using educational learning
software.
CRT & LCD
Touch screens generally fall into 2 categories. Those
which use CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) technology and those
which use use LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology.
CRT monitors are cheaper, can be viewed at from multiple
angles, can display a variety of resolutions but are
larger in physical size. They also use more energy.
In recent years, CRT monitors have become less and less
available due to general non-compliance with new recycleable
material regulations.
LCD monitors are more compact and slimline, more energy-efficient,
the viewable area on LCD touch screens is greater and
they have a defined range of resolutions. LCD displays
vary in brightness, and the brightness value determines
the quality of the monitor. LCD monitors have a narrower
range of viewing angles.
LCD touch monitors usually come with a desktop stand
or arm, can be wall mounted with a custom bracket, or
can be rear-mounted or panel-mounted in an enclosure.
Floor or counter-standing kiosk touch screens are also
available.
Touch Monitor Sizes
Typical touch screen viewable sizes are 12.1",
15", 17" and 19" but custom sizes and
larger size screens are also available. The size is
measured diagnally across the screen surface. CRT monitors
are bulkier and the casing takes much more depth than
flat-panel LCD monitors.
Touch Technology
There are a variety of touch sensor technologies available
depending on the type of application you intend to use
the screen for. The main touch screen technologies are:-
- 4-Wire Resistive Touchscreens:
This is an affordable, moderate-use technology that
allows for pressure to be applied by finger, glove
or pen on the transparent membrane of the touch screen.
It gives a reasonable picture quality and brightness.
- 5-Wire Resistive Touchscreens:
This is a more robust technology designed for heavier
use such as in retail and industry. It is also pressure
driven so a finger, glove or pen can be used.
- Capacitive Touchscreens: A high-quality
technology that provides for greater accuracy. Will
usually only work with finger contact. It senses electrical
signals to calculate the presence of a finger and
the location of the press. It also provides a faster
response time and longer durability. Projected
Capacitive touch screens have the added
ability to work behind a secondary surface such as
a store window.
- Surface Acoustic Wave Touchscreens:
This type of technology is suited to educational and
public kiosk use. It sends sound waves across the
scren surface and then detects interruptions to the
sound waves. May sometimes be affected by contaminants
so not suited to applications where dust, grease or
water may be present on the finger/stylus. Can be
used with finger or soft stylus.
- Near Field Imaging Touch screens:
These robust monitors are designed for industrial
applications and high-pollution environments.
- Infrared Touchscreens : Usually
suitable for larger screens. It works by creating
a grid of light across the screen surface, and then
checking for interruptions in the light flow. Fast
response times, but may sometiems be over-sensitive
to unintended finger/stylus movement.

range in size sizes from 10.4" to 17.0",
have thicknesses of 0.25" (6mm) and 0.50"
(12mm) and an antiglare glass option (0.25"
thickness only). they are sealable against
dust, splashing liquids, and other contaminants.
A privacy filter option provides for applications
involving sensitive information (e.g., ATM
transactions).
SecureTouch is suited to demanding, heavy-usage,
public-access applications including bank
ATM's, ticketing machines and kiosks. |
Touch Screens can be connected as peripherals to a
computer or are sometimes integrated with a full computer,
